The Department of Surgical Services at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center is
staffed by 15 Board-Certified full time attendings, and six part time attendings. Brookdale
University Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center Our goal is to provide quality, compassionate and
comprehensive care to our patients.
The Department of Surgical Services is one of the largest departments within the facility. Many
of our attending physicians are also Board-Certified in subspecialties. Brookdale University
Hospital has applied for center of excellence status in minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures.
Brookdale University Hospital performs over 10,000 surgical procedures yearly.

Bariatric In Patient Unit
All Surgical procedures are preformed at Brookdale University Hospital, the only hospital in Brooklyn with a dedicated in-patient unit. The state-of-the-art Bariatric Unit comprised of four private rooms located on the sixth floor of the Snapper Building. We offer a caring team of professionals, with special equipment and amenities to accommodate the patients’ special needs.
Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center has a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach to the detection and treatment of breast cancer. Brookdale’s Breast Health Services promotes early detection of Breast Cancer, and if diagnosed, provides appropriate medical care with a comprehensive approach to treatment and emotional support.
Critical Care Unit
The Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center is also a Level 1 Trauma Center. The Intensive Care unit is covered 24 hours a day by two surgical intensivist. The Critical Care unit is an eight- bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit, which cares for all critically ill patients from all surgical subspecialties.
Hand, Plastic, and Reconstructive Surgery
The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery's staff of board certified physicians and registered nurses, have extensive training and experience to provide the finest care available in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.
Wound Healing Center
The Wound Healing Center is staffed a team of highly skilled and trained technicians and nurses. It has a mission statement to improve the quality of life of patients suffering from wounds causing pain and threatening disability, loss of limb or life. We do this through a multidisciplinary integrated team approach in both the outpatient and inpatient level in order to provide the best care possible.
Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery
The Department of Surgery at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center started doing advanced laparoscopic surgery on August 9 th 1990. Our surgeons are among the leaders in laparoscopic surgery in Brooklyn. Our surgeons and residents are trained in laparoscopic techniques and perform such procedures as cholecystectomy (gall bladder), splenectomy (spleen), small bowel surgery, appendectomy, hiatal hernia, colon resection, stomach resection, and bariatric surgery. Our faculty includes oncology surgeons who perform advanced procedures on a regular basis. Laparoscopic surgery is minimally invasive and, couples a shorter recovery period with a lower risk of post-operative infection.
Brookdale's Division of Neurosurgery provides diagnosis and treatment for the entire spectrum of neurosurgical conditions such as, but not limited to, procedures for the brain, a wide range of spine surgery, surgical procedures for the treatment of peripheral nerve disorders, and various pain management procedures. All of the most modern equipment is available for micro neurosurgery, laser surgery and stereotactic procedures.
Otolaryngology/Head Neck Surgery
This division treats patients (adults and children) with diseases of the upper respiratory tract, larynx, ear, nose, sinuses, head and neck, esophagus, and tracheobronchial tree.
Brookdale University Hospital is the first hospital in Brooklyn to use the da Vinci S HD System, a new robotic technology for surgeries. The new surgical system integrates 3D HD endoscopy and state-of-the-art robotic technology to virtually extend the surgeon’s eyes and hands and ultimately provides patients with a better surgical procedure.
Doctors Neil Kutin and David Schwartz comprise the team of Board- Certified pediatric surgeons. They perform an extensive variety of standard and complicated cases in the pediatric age group. Their expertise runs the gamut from congenital to acquired pathology whether the condition is benign or malignant.
Our physicians have extensive experience in advanced cancer treatment techniques such as, but not limited to, Seed Implantation for Prostate Cancer, Mammosite for Breast Cancer, Gliasite for Brain tumors, and HDR Brachytherapy for various types of malignancy.
The Thoracic team includes Board Certified Thoracic Surgeons, all of whom are experienced cardiothoracic surgeons with special interest in general thoracic procedures (trachea, lung, thymus, pericardium, heart, esophagus and diaphragm) and especially minimally invasive thorascopic techniques.
