The Respiratory Therapy Department at Brookdale University Hospital & Medical Center is a 24-hour a day service of the hospital that is a part of the Pulmonary Division functioning within the Department of Medicine. New York State licensed and nationally credentialed respiratory therapists staff its services. Respiratory therapists are essential members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team who work in collaboration with the physicians and nurses to provide compassionate, high-quality care to all areas of the hospital. This service is delivered in both the acute and long-term care setting and provided for both inpatient outpatient populations.
Respiratory therapists provide conventional as well as the most advanced therapies within the field of respiratory care. The hospital has been an annual recipient of the Quality Respiratory Care Recognition certificate since 2003 by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC), the professional national organization of respiratory therapists. The hospital has received this honor for providing the “highest standards of respiratory care” to patients entrusted to our care.
Airway Management including endotracheal intubation and tracheal tube replacement.
Initiation and management of all patients receiving invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation in both acute and long term care settings. Two specialized units for ventilator dependent residents is provided exclusively in the long term care division.
Application of a comprehensive ventilator weaning program for all adult patients in both acute and long term care
Advanced modalities such as high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) for our neonates
Aerosol medication and oxygen therapies
Diagnostic Procedures: sputum induction, bedside spirometry, arterial punctures for analysis
Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT). Tests include:
Bronchospasmic evaluation: Pre and Post bronchodilator
Maximum Voluntary Ventilation (MVV)
Thoracic Gas Volume via nitrogen washout
Pulmonary Diffusion Capacity
Simple pulmonary stress test: 6 minute walk
Pulse Oximetry: at rest and at exercise
Arterial blood gas analysis as required
Operation of a comprehensive Sleep Center, overseen by a technical director and a specially trained and credentialed supervisor, with medical direction provided by a board certified physician.
Operation of a comprehensive Hyperbaric Medicine Department with specially trained and credentialed therapists and nurses who are directed by a board certified physician.

All tests are reviewed and interpreted by board certified pulmonologists.
