Hospital Facts 2008

  • Established in April 1921 as a small 75-bed building in Brownsville, the Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center (BUHMC) today is a 530-bed not-for-profit teaching hospital. BUHMC serves a community of over one million residents in Brooklyn and Southern Queens.

  • The MediSys Health Network, including Flushing, Jamaica, and Brookdale Hospitals has been designated as one of only four centers of Bioterrorism Preparedness in New York City. This positions the Network as a leader in this field.

  • The newly expanded Radutzky Emergency Care Pavilion and Level 1 Trauma Center is one of the busiest in New York. In 2007, we treated over 100,600 patients. There is also a Fast Track Center for urgent/minor injury and illness, separate adult and pediatrics department and a separate, recently renovated comprehensive separate Psychiatry Emergency Department.

  • Brookdale has developed a comprehensive network of six ambulatory primary care centers throughout Brooklyn, known as the Brookdale Family Care Centers. The BFCC network treated more than 106,000 patients in 2007.

  • Brookdale Hospital has the first Hyperbaric and Wound Healing Center in Brooklyn for the treatment of smoke inhalation, carbon monoxide poisoning, advanced wound healing, burns, decompression sickness, and radiation tissue injury among others.

  • Brookdale Hospital offers many specialized acute-care services, including a state-of-the-art, recently renovated Cardiac Telemetry Unit, Radiology Department and the Brookdale Digestive Health Center. It also has the only AIDS Designated Center in Brooklyn, with a 120 long-term care inpatient facility called “The Treatment for Life Center”.

  • BUHMC’s Pediatric Department enjoys an excellent reputation and provides a wide range of comprehensive health services for children from birth to adolescence including a multi-disciplinary service for the treatment of Pediatric Obesity, the “Live Light – Live Right” Program, an educational asthma program organized by the Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Care, “Breathe Right! One Child at a Time,” and a comprehensive center for the treatment of Sickle Cell and Pediatric Oncology.

  • Brookdale’s nursing home, the 448 bed Schulman and Schachne Institute for Nursing and Rehabilitation, as well as the 86 unit of senior assisted and independent living in the Arlene and David Schlang Pavilion, offers long and short-term care and are conveniently located on the Brookdale campus. Schulman & Schachne’s Adult Day Care Program provides adults and seniors with functional impairments the highest quality of health care.

  • Brookdale’s State Designated Stroke Center has been established to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment for patients who have suffered a “brain attack” from arrival at the hospital to discharge.

  • The Department of Surgery at BUHMC offers a variety of specialized services, including individualized weight loss surgery through the Advanced Bariatic Center. The Department is also the first in Brooklyn to use the Da Vinci S HD robotic surgical system. The system provides patients with state-of-the-art minimally invasive, urologic, gynecologic and general surgery.
