The Department of Orthopedic Surgery is responsible for the care and treatment of the musculoskeletal system in all age groups. This encompasses traumatic, acute events as well as non-acute problems.

The department serves as a training site for orthopedic residents from State University Of New York-Health Sciences Center Brooklyn.  At any time there are 3 rotating residents, two at the PGY 3 level and 1 at the PGY 4 level.  We also serve as a training site for Osteopathic Medical Students from the New York Institute Of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and  Physician Assistant Students from the New York Institute of Technology-PA program.

The bulk of training is dedicated to the orthopedic care of the trauma patient.  There is however significant experience in sports medicine, joint reconstruction and hand surgery. Within the department is a Division of Sports Medicine and a Division of Hand Surgery.
A weekly indication conference and a monthly M&M add dedicated didactics to the clinical experience. A twice weekly orthopedic clinic and a once weekly hand clinic enable the resident to become comfortable in post op follow-up as well as diagnosing and treating outpatient problems.  Elective cases are garnered from these clinics, which are supervised by Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeons.
